A Casselman Staple: Homemade Apple Butter

Since 1906, The Casselman has been serving our community warm, home-cooked meals and baked goods. One of our most popular items and a beloved customer favorite is our apple butter. Our delicious apple butter recipe has been passed down from generations and has been made the same for decades!

Keep reading to learn more about this scrumptious Casselman staple.

WHAT IS APPLE BUTTER?

Ironically enough, apple butter has nothing to do with butter — there is no butter in apple butter! Apple butter is a highly concentrated form of applesauce. It is produced from a slow and long cooking process of apples mixed with apple cider and warm spices like allspice, cinnamon and cloves. The mixture is cooked until the apples turn a dark brown color and break down into a jammy consistency that’s packed full of yummy apple flavor.

Apple butter differs from applesauce, too. Applesauce is made with water, sugar and fewer spices than apple butter. Also, applesauce is usually eaten on its own, while apple butter is typically used as a spreadable condiment or topping.

We think it comes down to the simple fact that apple butter is delicious! If you are craving a taste of the fall season at any time of the year, you just have to try it!

WAYS TO ENJOY APPLE BUTTER

One of our favorite ways to enjoy apple butter at The Casselman is on top of a piece of our freshly-baked bread! This is a classic combination that will melt in your mouth!

If you are looking to get creative, there are many other unique ways, both sweet and savory, to enjoy apple butter. Use it as a topping for waffles and pancakes, mixed into muffins or cake batter, worked into fruit bars, swirled into oatmeal, glazed over chicken or even as a topping on a ham sandwich. The options are endless!
