Activities to Enjoy at Herrington Manor State Park

Located in nearby Oakland, Maryland, Herrington Manor State Park features a 53-acre lake and various trails for hiking. In addition, the 365-acre park at Garrett State Forest offers swimming, canoeing, kayaking, biking, picnicking, hiking, tennis, basketball and volleyball. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Herrington Manor State Park is open from 8:00 am through sunset March through October and from 10:00 am through sunset November through February. 

There is a service charge of $3.00 per person for Maryland residents and $5.00 per person for out-of-state visitors if your visit occurs between the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day. All other times throughout the year are $3.00 per car for Maryland residents and $5.00 per car for out-of-state visitors. In addition, ski season weekends and holidays are $3.00 per person for Maryland residents and $5.00 per person for out-of-state visitors.

GO ON A HIKE

Herrington Manor State Park offers 12 miles of trails; a five-and-a-half-mile trail connects Herrington Manor and Swallow Falls State Park. You can purchase a trail guide here

There are also fat tire bike rentals available to rent from Memorial Day through Labor Day at the lake house. You can choose to rent for an hour ($10.00) or an entire day ($26.00). Rental hours are 10:00 am through 4:00 pm.

Herrington Manor State Park does not permit hunting; however, many of the hiking trails accessed through the park go through Garrett State Forest, where hunting is allowed. Visitors are encouraged to wear bright colors during hunting seasons. View the hunting guide for hunting season dates here.


HAVE A PICNIC 

Herrington Manor State Park is an ideal place to have a relaxing picnic lunch. The pavilion overlooks the 53-acre Herrington Lake with a swimming beach, a snack bar and boat rentals during the day. Picnic tables and grills are available near the day-use beach. 

Not sure what to pack? Make a short 20-minute drive over to The Casselman Bakery and Cafe. At The Casselman Bakery and Cafe, you can choose from deli sandwiches, pepperoni rolls and our famous homemade bread and apple butter. And do not forget to check out our fresh-baked desserts while you are there! Once you have filled your picnic basket with homemade goods, head to the picnic area at the park to enjoy the scenic view. 


GO SWIMMING OR BOATING

If the weather is warm, get your exercise in while cooling off on a hot day! The swimming beach at Herrington Manor State Park is open daily from 8:00 am to sunset, as weather and staffing permits. Lifeguards are on duty from 11:00 am through 6:00 pm from Memorial Day until Labor Day. Swimming is allowed at your own risk outside of guarded hours. 

Is it too chilly to enjoy a swim? Take a boat rental out for the afternoon! Although no gas-powered motors are allowed, the lake has a boat ramp for public use for non-motor boats. In addition, Herrington Manor offers stand-up paddleboards, canoes and kayaks for rent from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. You can learn more about the rentals and prices here.


EMBRACE WINTER ACTIVITIES

Enjoy cross country skiing, snowshoeing and even sledding at Herrington Manor State Park! The park offers ten miles of trails into the adjoining state forest that range from beginner to intermediate level. Equipment rentals are available at the Lake House on the weekends and at the park office during the week. Skis, boots, poles, snowshoes and sleds are available by the hour, half-day or full-day.
