Celebrating The Holidays at The Casselman

It’s the most wonderful time of the year in Grantsville, Maryland! From picturesque wintertime scenery and outdoor recreational activities to small-town shopping, visits from Santa Claus and holiday light displays, there is no better place to get into the spirit of the season than in Garrett County. And when you are ready for a little relaxation, we invite you to come to The Casselman for a stay at our historic inn or motel or make a visit to our restaurant and bakery.

While things might look a little different this year, there are still many ways to enjoy the holidays. Continue reading to learn more about some of our favorite ways to celebrate at The Casselman and in the Grantsville-area.

HOLIDAYS AT THE CASSELMAN

The magic of the season comes alive every year at The Casselman. Travelers will feel welcomed by the charming holiday lights that adorn the main building and windows of our historic inn. They can relax with either a nostalgic stay in our historic inn or one of our affordable motel rooms. Visitors can also enjoy a delicious country meal served in the warm and cozy atmosphere of our famous restaurant. And while you are there, don't forget to check out our Christmas tree located in the main dining room!

If you are looking for some fresh baked goods this holiday season, look no further than our bakery! Our bakers are hard at work every morning before the sun rises to make sure you have delicious baked goods. Not only will you find loaves of homemade bread and cinnamon rolls, but you will also find fresh baked cookies, pies entirely made from scratch, delicious jams, jellies and apple butter. For the holidays, we also offer meat and cheese trays and cookie trays, which are welcome additions to any holiday celebration! At The Casselman, we take pride in offering this level of freshness and quality to you every day. If you are interested in something not found on the shelf, we will be more than happy to make it for you!

A GREAT SMALL TOWN CHRISTMAS

A Great Small Town Christmas is a yearly celebration in Oakland, Maryland. Due to COVID-19, the celebration will look a little different. “Snap an Elfie” is a new event for 2020, and it helps support local Oakland businesses. If you purchase something at one of the businesses participating in this event, take an “Elfie” (selfie) with the elf displayed in the store and include your receipt, purchase or shopping bag in the picture. Then, check into the business on Facebook and upload your picture to be entered into a drawing for a prize chosen by that business. The elves displayed in these businesses are provided by local artists and GOBA member Lin Gilbert, Artists and Dreamers.

The annual Soup and Santa event has been canceled for this year, but don’t worry, Santa Claus will still be visiting Oakland! He will be at the Front Page Stage on Saturday, December 5th, 12th and 19th from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm. To ensure safety and social distancing, there will be a drive-through set up for children to see Santa.

CHRISTMAS LIGHT SHOW

The Christmas Light Show located at the Oakland Community Center runs from November 25th through January 1st. It begins each night at dusk and offers something for all ages. There are approximately 30,000 lights choreographed to music, and the program runs in a one hour loop. You can either park and watch from your car or stand outside to view the light show in all its majesty.

OUTDOOR RECREATION

Garrett County averages over 100 inches of snowfall per year, so there are no limits on the outdoor recreation options to be had in our winter wonderland! Beginner, intermediate and expert level snowsport enthusiasts can enjoy a wide range of activities including snowboarding, skiing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, snow tubing and a thrilling mountain coaster at Wisp. Wisp is located in McHenry, Maryland, near Deep Creek Lake and offers 172 acres of ski terrain and 33 slopes for nonstop entertainment.

If you are looking for some backcountry fun this holiday season, check out the guided snowshoeing or winter hiking tours from All Earth Eco Tours. These tours allow you an opportunity to venture into forests and backcountry areas to explore hidden gems and learn about the plants, animals, the local ecosystem and history of the area. These tours are fun for the whole family and are a perfect way to experience the beauty of wintertime in Deep Creek.
