Five Snow Day Activities for Kids

The cold winter months are here in Grantsville, Maryland! And with this time of year comes plenty of snow and the possibility of snow days. For children, snow days are a time to build snowmen, participate in snowball fights and drink delicious hot chocolate. But waking up to a winter wonderland is not always exciting for everyone. For adults, snow days can be tricky when trying to figure out fun activities to keep the kids entertained. Next time you are puzzled about what to do on a snow day, try these five activities with your kids. 


ACTIVITY #1: MAKE SNOW PAINT

Painting snow is a creative and entertaining activity that encourages your kids to spend time outside. Best of all, making snow paint is affordable and easy! You only need two tablespoons of cornstarch, two cups of water and liquid food coloring. Once you have combined the ingredients, pour the mixtures into liquid spray bottles (don’t forget to use multiple spray bottles if you have different colors). Once the spray bottles are ready, put on some warm winter gear, take the spray bottles outside, hold them close to the snow and paint away! Your kids can use snow paint to paint the ground, snowmen or snow angels.


ACTIVITY #2: BAKE COOKIES 

Baking cookies together is a perfect way to spend time with your children on a cold, snowy day. If you do not have all of the ingredients for your favorite cookie recipe, try making a delicious batch of kitchen sink cookies. If you are unfamiliar with these cookies, kitchen sink cookies are said to “have everything in them, but the kitchen sink.” Simply put, these cookies contain a bunch of ingredients found in your kitchen pantry baked together to perfection!


Ingredients: 

  • 2 sticks butter, softened
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cups Kraft caramel bits
  • 3/4 cup milk chocolate chips
  • 3/4 cup small square or twist pretzels, broken
  • Coarse or flaked sea salt

ACTIVITY #3: MAKE A DIY BIRD FEEDER

If you live in an area where it gets cold in the winter, the birds in your area will be more hungry during the winter season. Many of the seed sources that birds enjoy during the summertime, like sunflowers, are depleted during the winter months. This seasonal lack of seeds makes it more difficult for birds to find food.

The next time there is a snow day, one helpful and educational activity you can do with your family is to make a DIY bird feeder. All you need to make this DIY bird feeder is some twine or string, an empty toilet paper roll, peanut butter and birdseed. Once your bird feeder is complete, hang it up on a nearby tree and enjoy watching and learning about the different species of birds that arrive with your kids.   


ACTIVITY #4: DINE AT OR ORDER TAKEOUT FROM A KID-FRIENDLY RESTAURANT

If the weather is safe enough to drive, treat your family to a meal from a kid-friendly restaurant. ACTIVITY #5: DRINK HOMEMADE HOT CHOCOLATE

The perfect end to a snow day filled with fun activities is to enjoy some delicious hot chocolate. Consider skipping the pre-packaged hot chocolate mixes and try making some slow-cooker hot chocolate from scratch instead. We think this yummy and easy drink recipe will be a hit with your entire family! 

Ingredients: 

  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • Mini marshmallows, for garnish
