Town of Grantsville

Grantsville is a small, picturesque town located in Garrett County, Maryland, near the Pennsylvania border. It is home to nearly 1,000 people and offers a variety of year-round activities. The city of Grantsville includes many interesting historical sites, including: 

  • Interpretive Panel: Interpretive panels describing the area's history are located in front of The Casselman Inn and at Grantsville Town Park's main entrance. 
  • Cornucopia Farm: This private residence still bears the name of the original land grant established in 1785.
  • Fuller-Baker Log House: Now a private residence, this log house was likely a drover's inn or tavern during the nineteenth century.
  • Stanton's Mill: Built-in 1797, it operated as a grist mill continuously from 1824 until 1990.
  • Tomlinson Inn: Now a private residence, this large stone home was once a busy inn along the National Road. Its guests included Albert Gallatin and James K. Polk. 
  • Grantsville Community Museum: Open May 18 to October, the Grantsville Community Museum holds a wealth of information on Grantsville's history and life.

Deep Creek Lake 

Deep Creek Lake is a popular all-season travel destination that is only 20 minutes away from Grantsville, Maryland. It is the largest freshwater lake in Maryland and covers 3,900 acres with 65 miles of shoreline. Deep Creek Lake offers a multitude of recreational options including boating, white-water rafting, fishing, jet-skiing, kayaking, swimming and water sports. In the winter, Deep Creek Lake even offers ice-fishing on the frozen lake.

Deep Creek Lake State Park is located on the east side of Deep Creek Lake. Deep Creek Lake State Park has a public boat launch that is open 24 hours a day, weather-permitting. It also offers a beach area for swimming.

Springs Historical Society 

The Springs Historical Society of the Casselman Valley is located in Springs, Pennsylvania. The Springs Historical Society is a non-profit organization founded in 1957. It sponsors the Springs Folk Festival, Farmers' Market, Museum, Alta Schrock Nature Trail and other public programs that can be enjoyed by residents and travelers to the area. Some of these events have been altered or rescheduled due to COVID-19, so check the website before visiting the area if you are interested in attending a specific event. 


Casselman River Bridge State Park

Casselman River Bridge State Park comprises four acres and is located in eastern Grantsville on Route 40. At Casselman River Bridge State Park, visitors can enjoy picnics, fly fishing and photography. When it was built in 1813, it was the longest single-span stone arch bridge in the United States and served as an essential link on the National Road until 1933. Although the bridge no longer carries vehicular traffic, it is open to pedestrians and is accessible for disabled visitors.


Antietam National Battlefield

Antietam National Battlefield is located in western Maryland, approximately ten miles south of Hagerstown. Antietam National Battlefield is considered one of the best-preserved battlefields in the country. It provides visitors with opportunities to see and understand how the terrain affected the soldier's experience during twelve hours of combat on September 17, 1862. This battle ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia's first invasion into the North and caused Abraham Lincoln to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. The battlefield is approximately 3,000 acres that can be traveled via car or by walking. At Antietam National Battlefield, visitors can visit the Dunker Church, Bloody Lane, Burnside Bridge, National Cemetery, the Newcomer House and the Pry House Field Hospital Museum.
