SAVAGE RIVER STATE FOREST TRAILS

At Savage River State Forest, you will find over 55,000 acres of terrain for every type of outdoor adventure. Offering nine different hiking trails, this is undoubtedly the spot to explore! The trails range from moderate to difficult and from four miles up to 24 miles long. The trails offer many different scenic routes, such as enjoying a brisk walk around the lake or hiking through the majestic hemlock forest, which provides a beautiful mix of colorful hardwoods. While hiking a trail in New Germany State Park, be on the lookout for frequent visitors, such as deer, squirrels or foxes. Swallow Falls Canyon Trail is a 1.25-mile traffic-only hiking loop that any skill level enjoys; it is perfect for families with small children. As you hike, take in the majestic old-growth forest that surrounds you — some of the hemlocks and pine trees are over 300 years old! As you walk, you can take in several breathtaking waterfalls in the park, including Swallow Falls, Tolliver Falls and Muddy Creek Falls. Crashing down at 53 feet, Muddy Creek Falls is the highest free-falling waterfall in Maryland and a must-see on your next visit to Swallow Falls State Park.


HERRINGTON MANOR STATE PARK TRAILS

With its lakeside beach, Herrington Manor State Park offers many outdoor activities, including hiking. All four trails vary in difficulty and length. Unlike other trails near Grantsville, all trails at Herrington Manor are grass-covered and broad. As a result, the terrain varies as well, with some trails requiring more climbing than others.
