A LONG HISTORY OF HOSPITALITY
Built in 1842, The Casselman was one of the numerous inns along the National Trail to serve the stagecoaches, covered wagons, drovers and riders that made the Old Pike the busiest thoroughfare crossing the mountains. In its over 180 years of history, The Casselman has been called Drover’s Inn, Farmer’s Hotel, Dorsey’s Hotel and most notably, The Casselman. Few of the inns and taverns remain that were once along this well-traveled route, but we are proud to say that The Casselman is one.
Daniel Grant, an English engineer from whom Grantsville's town took its name, was the original owner of a tract of land that he called Cornucopia. It included much of Grantsville and one thousand acres around the town. A later owner, Solomon Sterner, built The Casselman with brick that was handmade and burnt on the land. Much of the woodwork was fashioned from hand-hewn timbers and hand-planed boards. Each room in the original three-story federal brick house contained a fireplace, which was the only source of heat for warmth and cooking. Later in 1903, a kitchen was added by the Dorseys.
Ivan and Della Miller acquired the place in 1964. The business soon outgrew the facilities and the Millers added a dining room, bakeshop and forty-unit motel. The Casselman continues today as a second-generation family-owned business, and we are considered an important historic landmark in western Maryland. The legendary hospitality and service offered to our guests in 1842 are still provided to our guests today.

EAT A HOME-COOKED MEAL AT OUR RESTAURANT
We invite you to come and eat in our restaurant’s original dining room with its wooden floor and historic decor or in the “new” dining room, which was added in 1973 and comfortably seats 125 people. Our favorite recipes are reminiscent of the Pennsylvania Dutch and Amish background of the owners.
