The Historic Dorsey Suite

The Casselman’s long history of serving travelers and the local community of Grantsville, Maryland, dates back to 1842 when Solomon Sterner built the inn to serve stagecoaches, covered wagons, drivers and riders on the National Road. The charm and hospitality experienced by those travelers from times past continue today to our guests that visit our historic inn, motel, restaurant and bakery.

One of our favorite parts of The Casselman Inn is its charming, two-room Dorsey Suite with its newly decorated bedroom and sitting room areas. Take a step back in time with us and continue reading to learn more about the historic Dorsey Suite.

THE HISTORY OF THE DORSEY SUITE

In The Casselman Hotel, 1842-2017: Historical Sketches, Memoirs and Stories, author Joanna Miller provides a detailed journey of The Casselman’s history. According to Joanna, in the early 1970s, the Miller family, who were the owners of The Casselman at that time, fondly re-named Room 5 the Dorsey Room. This was done to honor the Dorsey family, who owned the inn and lived there in the early 1900s.

In her book, Joanna shared that the Dorsey Room (Room 5) and the room it connected with (Room 6) became known as the Dorsey Suite when the Miller family redecorated the rooms in 2006. The changes the Miller’s made to the suite included: new wallpaper, the addition of Victorian decor and a new bathroom with a whirlpool tub.
