Five Things to Look for When Booking a Room at an Inn

Coming across an authentic inn is not as common as it once was. Historically, inns provided food, lodging and stables for horses and acted as community gathering places. Today, the definition of an inn has not changed much (except for the horses, of course!). Inns are still quaint destinations where travelers can find lodging, food and drink services and experience a family-like atmosphere.

The Casselman is a historic inn, motel and restaurant that has been around since 1842. To this day, we continue our long, treasured history of serving travelers and the local community of Grantsville, Maryland. If you are looking for old-fashioned hospitality, tranquility and relaxation, we hope you will consider staying with us!

Keep reading to learn more about five things you should look for when booking a room at an inn.

DO THEY HAVE A RICH HISTORY?

Visiting an inn allows you the opportunity to take a step back in time. Typically, authentic inns are located in historical homes or buildings that have been converted into lodging. When you choose to stay at an inn, you will be surrounded by antique furnishings, charming photographs and will experience an intimate environment that will help you feel instantly relaxed.

Built-in 1842, The Casselman was one of the numerous inns along the National Trail to serve the stagecoaches, covered wagons, drivers and riders that made the Old Pike the busiest thoroughfare crossing the mountains. In our 180 years of history, we have been called Drover’s Inn, Farmer’s Hotel, Dorsey’s Hotel and most notably, The Casselman. The Casselman continues now as a second-generation family-owned business, and we are proud to be considered a historic landmark in western Maryland. DO THEY OFFER UNIQUE ROOMS WITH MODERN AMENITIES?

The rooms in an inn are decorated with a unique style and furnishings representing the inn’s history and location. The rooms are comfortable, spacious and quiet, which will ensure that you experience tranquility. And just because you stay at an inn does not mean that you leave the modern world behind! Most inns have modern amenities like WiFi, air conditioning and cable television.

The historic Casselman Inn features the two-room Dorsey Suite with its newly decorated bedroom and sitting room areas. The classic beauty of the antique furnishings and oversized double bed combined with the sofa’s comfort that can open into an additional bed and the luxury of a private bath with a clawfoot tub and a soaking tub make this suite exquisite. A small kitchenette down the hallway with an eating area is also available. In addition to the suite, two other bedrooms with private baths are also available.

Amenities in The Dorsey Suite include:

  • Air conditioning
  • Bathtub
  • Cable television
  • Non-smoking
  • Private bathroom
  • Telephone
  • Oversized bathtub
  • Sink in-room
  • Tables and chairs
  • Breakfast meal included (excluding Sunday mornings)
  • Free WiFi

DO THEY HAVE COMPLIMENTARY BREAKFAST?

Many inns provide their guests with a complimentary breakfast that includes a delicious, hot meal served in their restaurant or the dining room’s cozy atmosphere. This helps give you the relaxing feeling of being at home.

Each night at The Casselman Inn includes a voucher for a free breakfast in our dining room the following morning (excluding Sunday mornings when our restaurant is closed). If the restaurant is closed, there are items available in our breakfast nook.

While you are enjoying breakfast at The Casselman Inn Restaurant, be sure to sample our famous apple butter! Apple butter is served in a squeeze bottle on each table and pairs perfectly with our freshly-baked bread that is brought out for our customers to enjoy with their meals. If you would like to learn more about our apple butter, and how you can try some for yourself (even if you can’t visit us in-person), check out our blog, A Casselman Staple: Homemade Apple Butter

DO THEY OFFER EXCEPTIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE?

Since most inns only allow a small number of guests at a time, you will feel more welcomed and experience personalized attention during your stay. The inn staff will know who you are, and you will experience special touches that other lodging options do not have.

The legendary hospitality that was provided to our guests in 1842 is still showcased to travelers who visit The Casselman today. We strive to provide you with a clean and comfortable room and provide you with friendly, attentive service throughout your visit. We want you to know that The Casselman's professional and friendly staff are committed to making your stay both enjoyable and comfortable! DO THEY HAVE EXCITING ATTRACTIONS NEARBY?

If you enjoy sightseeing, staying at an inn can allow you the opportunity to explore and enjoy new activities. Inns are traditionally located in the countryside and along highways. The staff usually reside in the area and can offer a variety of fun recommendations for exciting adventures nearby!

One of our favorite places to visit at The Casselman Inn is Deep Creek Lake. Deep Creek Lake is a popular all-season travel destination that is only 20 minutes away from Grantsville, Maryland. It is the largest freshwater lake in Maryland and covers 3,900 acres with 65 miles of shoreline. Deep Creek Lake offers a multitude of recreational options including boating, white-water rafting, fishing, jet-skiing, kayaking, swimming and water sports. In the winter, there is even ice-fishing on the frozen lake. And while you are there, do not forget to make a stop and visit The Casselman Bakery and Cafe for some freshly baked goods!
